Military patch, looks like it might be for a Naval Petty Officer First Class.
On the reverse side of the patch, the year 1941 is stitched in.

Found in "Gone With the Wind" by Margaret Mitchell. Published by Macmillan, 1936.

    That rating patch belonged to a Boatswain's Mate, which I believe is the oldest rating in the Navy. It's a rating that designates deck crew. 1941 was an awfully significant year...
