Recipe for "Babe Ruth Cookies."
1 egg
1 1/3 c flour
1/2 tea salt
3/4 c white sugar
1/2 tea soda
1/2 tea vanilla
1/2 c butter
2 - 5 cent bars, cut (I think they are probably referring to Baby Ruth candy bars)
Cream short (no mention of shortening above?) and sugar, beat in egg and other ingredients. Chill and bake 10-12 minutes at 375

Probably a substitution for the butter called for--my mother and grandmother always substituted shortening (only Crisco pure vegetable shortening!) for butter in recipes.

Mainly I wanted to say, though, that's a good book. Not easy to find now, but if you can get it from your library and like an old-fashioned love story that's not a Romance, that has a little bit of a ghost story or time-travel element, get this before it's discarded.
