I found these papers folded neatly in a manila envelope separate from the rest of the letters. What caught my eye was the first note, signed by Samuel Philips, author of the letter I posted on
Monday:

Michael, wow. These are heartbreaking, even without reading. I wonder how many letters he picked up that were written by the soldier in hopes it would be found and delivered in the event of his death. I can only imagine how it felt to handle them. I don't think I could have stood it.
