Portrait
Stunning tintype photograph. On the back is a stamp marked "Norman Taylor = Aug 72 1866."
If you look very closely at the other stamp at the top left, it says "Aug 27 1866." The second stamp may have just been an error.

Rites And Ceremonies
This is... well, I have no idea what this is. I'll do my best to describe it.
It's dated 1837 at the top, on the bottom is written
??? Plaintiff (?-looks like it was edited at some point)
Spartan Lector
Infant Editor
In the middle is a folded piece of paper with a portrait of a man, hand drawn. The eyes and mouth have been cut out in a way to reveal another drawing underneath (think of how moveable books work). There's a tab at the bottom, when pulled down it reads "Before the rites and ceremonies," with the drawn face looking glum. Pull the tab up and it reads "After the rites and ceremonies," and the man's face shows a smile. I took a short video to demonstrate:

Charles Hamilton Jr.
West Walnut Lane
Germantown
Philadelphia
Dear Sir,
I regret very much that I will not be able to be with you on Saturday, but as I have another engagement for that evening it will be impossible for me to come.
I hope you will win all their money and illustrate to the boys that they know nothing about the game whatever.
Hoping to see you again soon in the near future,
I remain,
Yours truly,
Francis W. Slaughter

Sergeant Mason's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Trade card featuring a portrait of Sergeant Mason. On the reverse is an advertisement for George Keyes' Son & Co.. Is it a portrait of the Sergeant Mason who attempted to shoot Charles J. Guiteau, the man who assassinated President James Garfield? I can't verify. It's my best guess.

This Just In
The bookshop has seen a lot of really nice books come in over the past few weeks. I thought I would share a few of them with you today. The photos aren't the best, I just wanted to take a bunch so you'd have something to check out.
First edition of "Charlotte's Web" signed by E.B. White
First (privately printed) edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover
Lovely little two-volume set of Homer's "Iliad" from the 1870s (I'm keeping this one)
Rare 1825 reference on expeditions to Brazil
Not particularly rare or expensive, just a neat old title
1845 volume, part of a set collecting all of the various expeditions sponsored by the United States. This one particular volume is all about Hawaii
First printing of Tom Wolfe's "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test." I've never seen it in hardcover
1766 book in original binding
Wee little volume of Homer's "Odyssey" - my favorite book

Jane
Engraving of Jane Austen.
If you take a look at her printed signature, it bears a striking resemblance to the blog's title font, which is called... "Jane Austen."
Found in "The Holy Bible: Volume One, Genesis to Deuteronomy" edited by Adam Clarke. Published by Carlton and Porter, 1860. (The book won't fit on the scanner bed, for what it's worth, it's a plain leather binding)
