I'm not exactly sure what this is - it appears to be crocheted, and it's quite long, over two feet. I suppose it could be a bookmark, but it seems a bit too fancy for such a humble task. Any guesses?
Found in (well, around actually, as pictured in the photo) "Of Human Bondage" by W. Somerset Maugham. Published by Garden City Publishing Co., 1939.

Yes, it is crochet, and I guess not a bookmark, but a book belt (or just a belt for a child?)
ReplyDeleteLooks like a belt to me.
ReplyDeleteA Belt in the making?
ReplyDeletePerhaps a strap for a woman's over the shoulder handbag...cannot determine it its crochet, macrame or knitting...most interesting book mark, one could tie a book around and tote it along.
ReplyDeleteThere are some knit or crochet patterns out there for bookmarks that wrap around the book. Like a fancier version of a normal bookmark. They usually have some sort of clasp, though.
ReplyDeleteHere's an example of the type I'm talking about:

Patricia, I would say crochet, as it looks very similar to a coverlet my mother spent years making; the pattern for that used some of the same stitches as I can see in this.
ReplyDeleteI'd call it tatting.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of it being a book holder/belt
ReplyDeleteThe book "Of Human Bondage" was found tied up with a book belt. Am I the only one who finds that funny?
