Recipe for coffee cake (I think). Some of the writing has faded a bit and is tough to make out:
6 cups flour
1 cup butter
1 cup of coffee prepared as from the label
1 cup molasses
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of raisins
1 teaspoon soda
Spice with cloves and cinnamon
Found in the 1886 edition of "The Centaur Almanac and Cook Book."
Here are a few more scans of that old almanac:

I enjoy following your blog, and this post is lots of fun. I think I'll try the coffee cake recipe, and maybe some of the others, too. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great book! Wonder what kind of pan and temps for this cake?
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing these great finds with us. I have your first book, saving pennies n nickels for the second.
real coffee in a "coffee" cake! amazing
ReplyDeleteI'm not certain what type of pan was originally used for the coffee cake, but I suspect that any pan which is large enough to hold the batter without being too big would work.
ReplyDeleteTemp, probably about 350 degrees fahrenheit; which is today's standard for most cakes. Not knowing the age of the recipe, I couldn't say what type of ovens were typically in use at the time, but I do know that the older the recipe, the less likely the temperature they were able to obtain was either stable or accurate.
I have an old recipe that is similar and was popular with my Grandmother called Mary Janes, it was a snack type cake that had cold coffee in it, and you put frosting on it. Ha, just now realized that the name could of had a different meaning, lol, if you remember the 60's you know what I mean.
