I was thinking... Updated

Books are a great way to escape from the stresses of our lives, our deadlines and bills, our worries and our wants.

If you know someone that's having a tough time, I want to hear about it. I would love to help out in my own small way by sending along a book care package.

The wonderful Melissa from toboldlyfold.com has generously offered this handmade book to the winner of the care package. Yes, I said made by hand:

Pretty awesome. Please repay her kindness by checking out more of her fantastic work at www.toboldlyfold.com.

If you have a story, leave a note in the comments or send me an email at fb@forgottenbookmarks.com. I will pick one of the stories tomorrow afternoon, and we can get a box of books in the mail.

I hope to hear from you.

  2. What a lovely thought. I know very well how a book really can cheer you up when you're having a bad day.

    Here's my nomination: http://www.frishta.org.uk/

It's an orphanage in India and the children are desperate to learn English. A box of books really would change lives for them.

  3. I cannot think of anyone in particular at the moment, but I wanted to take a minute to agree with the other commenters: this is a sweet thing to do, and receiving an unexpected care package is one of the best feelings in the world. I hope whoever it is you send it to is cheered by it.

  4. My brother's employee Desiree has three young kids who might love a box of books, especially spanish or spanish/english books. My Mom has helped them find an apartment (they used to live behind a sheet that divided a living room at her grandma's house) and we've all donated furniture, bedding, and food. They don't have a lot but they have each other. Perhaps some books would encourage a love of reading. I know they go to the local library story hour some weekends. What a wonderful thought!

  5. I love looking at your posts every day. Thank you for the little bit of happiness you share each day by posting the stuff you find. :-) What a very nice idea you have to send out books to those who might be in need of a pick up! I would like to nominate Lisa Huse, the mother of Jessica Huse. Lisa Huse and Jessica's Dad have taken care of their daughter around the clock since a tragic accident left Jessica with a traumatic brain injury. But with much faith, hope, and community care, Jessica is on her way to recovery! Lisa's devotion and fight for the medical care her daughter needs has been a true inspiration to all watching. As you can imagine, the emotional, physical, and financial stresses can sometimes seem overwhelming. I would imagine that receiving a care package of books (and a beautiful hand made journal!) would not only give her the enjoyment of something to take her mind off the burden of every day life (if only for a few minutes at a time) but give her joy to know others "out there" are thinking of her. Reading to Jessica and reading while Jessica is having medical treatments are also ways Lisa would appreciate the books. Jessica's Dad and 13 yr. old brother also live in the house and would love reading material as well I'm sure. :-) This site tells a little more about Jessica: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jessica-Huse-/130998716922185?sk=info Lisa LOVES to tell about her wonderful daughter and the miracle that is taking place, which is why I have posted this publicly. Thank you for considering her. :-)

  10. My baby sister opened up to me the other day. She's seeking a new start - one of less narcotics & alcohol and more creativity and ambition. She has it in her... she has the desire to make something of herself.
I know that reading can open up her world and give her something exciting to be a part of - far from bad friends and old habits - and can motivate her to want even more from life.
