Contest has ended.

Giving away these five books, volumes 1,2,4,5 and 6 of the 8 volume set "The Works of Lord Byron" from 1825.

Books are in rough shape, leather covers detached, some illustrations missing, but I though they still had a neat shelf look and, well, they are 185 years old.

Comment to enter, I will be taking entries here and on Twitter and Facebook. Winner announced tomorrow at 10:00 AM EST.

  3. My folks are visiting me at the moment here in the North Highlands; after this they're going to visit my mum's cousin, who lives in Aberdeenshire at the Gallowhill of Gight — right next to the ruins of the castle where Byron spent the early years of his life, and, they tell me, was first corrupted by his nurse-maid!

I figure that, tangentially, makes my comment relevant. And the books look beautiful!

  8. I have recently found (and enjoyed) two old-ish copies of Baudelaire and Rimbaud. This was the first time when I persevered at reading poetry, although I am an otherwise avid reader. I Really enjoyed the experience, and I started looking at other poets work - Byron came up of course but I haven't got around to actually buy and read any of his works! So I'd love to rescue these volumes, and well as to read them...

  12. Alrightythen! Can't see what the covers look like, but if I'm lucky I will. Anything like the edge, and I'll be really happy.

  15. If we must have a tyrant, let him at least be a gentleman who has been bred to the business, and let us fall by the axe and not by the butcher's cleaver.

  18. Ooo, I LOVE old books! I have the first editions of John Greenleaf Whittier's complete poetry (my parents found that for a high school graduation gift for me) and Alfred Lord Tennyson's complete poetry, another amazing find from my parents in a New England B&B! I can't remember the name of the B&B, but it has lots of books you're allowed to have. :)

I would love love love this collection!!! Thanks for having the contest! :)

  32. Dare I mention how they would look on the shelf with my two similarly battered volumes of Pope (1757), or does that disqualify me?
For that matter, is the Pope of any use to you? It's "The Works"—volume V, The Dunciad and other pieces, and volume IX, "Being the THIRD [volume] of his LETTERS".
    Best,
    M.
