ReplyDeleteThis site is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Hope I win the Harvard Classics. Why? Because I still believe in the strength of a liberal arts education based on a familiarity of the classics, the five foot shelf and lifelong learning.
ReplyDeleteOh this would be fun. Lock myself in up at the cabin (too small to be graced with the monker of 'cottage') & work my way through them all summer!

ReplyDeleteHarvard University Press does some great design work. I have a few volumes from their Oriental Series as well as the Loeb Classics, and the quality matches up nicely with the tastefulness of the design.

Great addition to my home library!
ReplyDeletePlease enter me. My daughter needs to read these (once she learns to read.
ReplyDeleteBefore I read this post, I was reading an email from the liaison librarian at my uni. I needed access to some old print journals, and he told me that the library had access to the fulltext online. While happy that I can finally get to browse through the journal, there was something that was missing.
ReplyDeleteI think I was quite looking forward to flipping through old dusty books, looking at the words, feeling the pages between my fingers. And I'm feeling a little sad now, that we're reading more stuff online, than holding an actual physical book on our hands. The thing for me is that browsing through the actual collection is MUCH easier to get a quick overview than scrolling and clicking through webpages.
Okay, maybe this is sort of a rant, but I think you would understand what I mean. I hope that the person who gets this will not treat it as just another collection or worse, decoration for their house or bookshelf.
I'm in. Thanks,

ReplyDeleteThose books need to be held and read! And maybe used as a coaster once and stuffed with a couple of bookmarks because one person could not wait for the other to finish before she started it too.
ReplyDeleteNot that I do that.

ReplyDeleteIf the book gods are smiling on me, they will be mine. ;^)
