Appropriately enough, Cooper's book "The Spy" was where the Betsy Flanagan story first hit print in 1821.
William Grimes demolishes the story in "Straight Up Or On The Rocks", his history of the cocktail. (The word was used by Washington Irving in 1809, but first appears in an upstate New York newspaper in 1806.)
